A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF THE VERTICAL DIS-CRETIZATION OF ATMOSPHERIC MODELS

Abstract
Discussions are made on the vertical discretization of those quantities related to the temperature.Analyses show that the computation of those quantities should be carried out by different methods for different cases.In the smooth vertical temperature profile case,usual methods,such as finite difference,Tschebyscheff polynomial and soon,may be used.In the unsmoot hed vertical temperature profile case,how ever,it is better to separate the temperature into the basic temperature and the departure temperature T',such that can appro ximate the unsmoothed part of the profile and T' beco messmooth,and then better results can be obtained by usual methods.Computational examples based on ideal fields indicate that the results obtained by the above technique are,to a great extent,better than those directly obt ined by usual methods,especially in computation of geopotential and vertical temperature advection in the unsmoothed vertical temperature profile case.
