Improvement of sea su rface turbulent fluxes parameterization scheme in CAM3 and its impact on climate simulation

  • The parameterization scheme of sea surface turbulent fluxes in CAM3 (Community A tmosphere Model Version 3) was improved by the parameterization for win d gustiness, which considers the contribution to sea surface fluxes by the bound ary free convective and precipitation convective. The new parameterization schem e is named CAM3 ME (Mesoscale Enhancement) scheme. Using the observational SST d ata, the interannual variability of the general circulation was simulated by the CAM3 model with the original parameterization scheme and the ME of sea surface turbulent fluxes. Results show that the CAM3 ME scheme simulates the interannual variability of winter (DJF) and summer (JJA) general circulation more reasonabl e than the original scheme, especially over North Pacific and North America in w inter (DJF) and over the southern hemisphere oceans in summer (JJA).
