A review and prospect of research on the Qingzang plateau summer monsoon and its impacts

  • As a crucial member of the Asian summer monsoon system, the Qingzang plateau summer monsoon (QPSM) significantly influences the energy and water cycles over the Qingzang plateau (QP) by regulating spatial and temporal variations of summer circulation and precipitation over the QP. The research on the QPSM and its climatic effects not only contributes to a deeper understanding of abnormal mechanisms behind the plateau's summer circulation, but also holds significant scientific importance for improving the prediction of summer climate in the QP. Consequently, research on the QPSM has attracted extensive attention. In this paper, we review the research on the QPSM from various aspects, including its inception, variation characteristics, and influencing factors. Furthermore, the paper summarizes recent research progresses on the QPSM from various perspectives such as climatic characteristics of its establishment and retreat, the linkage between mid-to-high latitude atmospheric teleconnections and the QPSM, and climatic impacts of the QPSM. Lastly, the paper offers an outlook and discussion on scientific issues that remain to be resolved in the study of the Qingzang plateau summer monsoon.
