THE WESTERN AND CENTRAL PACIFIC RAINFALL AND THE EL NINO EVENTS

Abstract: The variations of rainfall in the Western and Central Equatorial Pacific are investigated by using the three month rainfall (Oct.to Dec.) deta set for the period from the years 1899 to 1982.It is found that the main characteristic of the Central Pacific rainfall between the area 20°N-10°S and north or south is the contrary to each other. The rainfall in the Central Pacific and the sea surface temperature in the Eastern Equatorial Pacific are highly positive correlated. An analysis of the sea level pressure indicates that the equatorial low is moved to the east near the dateline, the subtropical high is weakened in the Southern Pacific and the high pressure is predominated over the Australia, when there is plentiful precipitation in the Central Pacific. It is noted that the basic characteristics of 1982-83 El Nino event were not unusual by considering its influence on the rainfall and the atmospheric circulation from other events, but its intensity might be the strongest one in the last several decades.
