Abstract:
A description is given of the application of the finite element method to solve the two-dimensional neutrally stratified surface-layer flow problems over terrain. The velocity components and the turbulent viscosity are approximated over each element by quadratic interpolation functions, while linear interpolation is used for the pressure. The mix-length scale of turbulence is specified algebraically. The problem is then reduced to the solution of a set of nonlinear algebraic equations, and the frontal method of solution is adopted.Illustrative examples are wind flow over escarpment, triangle hill and embankment.
