Abstract:
Using a beta-plane quasigeostrophic barotropic vorticity model, eighteen experiments with the initial fields that are deviated from that correspo nding to the dipole pattern described by the analytical solution of the vorticity equation whose integration times are from 4 to 6 model days are performed. Three movenent kinds of the vortices have been exhibited, that is, west wards, eastwards, and north or southwards. In certain ranges of the parameters in the model, while the total dipole energy is dispersed away, the cyclonic vortex can intensify, which is different with that the vortex int ensity decreases with time because of the energy dispersion.
